ACL TEARS

The anterior cruciate ligament is a structure that imparts stability to the knee.  It is  important in keeping the leg from translating forward compared to the thigh. It also prevents the knee from buckling during cutting maneuvers.

The ACL can be injured in many ways including twisting injuries, a sudden change of direction while running, or from direct contact to the knee. Symptoms include knee swelling, pain and instability where your knee may buckle under you, especially when you change directions.

The diagnosis is based on physical exam findings and imaging studies that may include an MRI of the knee.

The treatment depends on the age and expectations of the patient.  For young adults who want to return to athletic activities, surgery is usually recommended.  Surgery usually consists of arthroscopic evaluation of the joint and reconstruction of the ligament using a piece of tissue from the patient or from a cadaver.
