ANKLE SPRAINS

A sprain is a tear of the ligament, a structure that connects one bone to another. Ankle sprains are usually caused by a twisting or rolling mechanism.  The anterior talofibular ligament is commonly the ligament injured  in an ankle sprain.

Initial symptoms include pain, swelling and possibly bruising around the ankle. You may initially have difficulty putting weight on the injured leg.

The diagnosis is based on physical examination and x-rays which are usually taken to make sure you have not broken any bones.

Initial treatment includes rest, icing and elevation to reduce swelling.  A brace can give some support to the ankle when you walk.  If after several weeks your ankle still feels weak, physical therapy may be prescribed to strengthen some of the muscles around the ankle.

If after several months you have persistent pain and sensation of instability, additional test such as stress x-rays of the ankle or an MRI may be necessary to evaluate for chronic ligament injuries.

When symptoms of pain and instability  persist despite conservative measures, surgery may be needed to further evaluate the inside of the joint for injury and to repair or reconstruct the ligaments of the ankle.
