ARTHRITIS OF THE ELBOW

The elbow joint actually consists of two joints: one to bend your arm, and the other that allows for rotation of your forearm. Arthritis of the elbow occurs as the cartilage which acts as a cushion between the bones in your elbow joint breaks down.  This leads to pain and stiffness.

The diagnosis is based on physical exam and x-ray findings.

Depending on the exact nature and severity of your disease, treatment may include physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, injections or surgery.  Surgery may involve procedures to remove bone spurs from the elbow, or it may consist of an elbow replacement where the arthritic bone is removed and replaced with metal and plastic components.
