PATELLOFEMORAL KNEE REPLACEMENT
- The knee joint consists of three compartments: The medial compartment, lateral compartment and patellofemoral compartment. Traditional total knee replacement surgery replaces all three compartments. In some cases only one compartment is affected.
- Patellofemoral knee replacement replaces only the portion of the knee that is damaged. Sometimes this is the patellofemoral compartment, between the knee cap (patella) and the thigh bone (femur).
- If the other two compartments of the knee are healthy, a patellofemoral replacement can have many advantages:
- There is less trauma to the bony structures of the knee.
- Recovery can be faster.
- If your knee replacement needs to be revised in the future, this is usually easier to do if you have had a partial knee replacement compared to a total knee replacement in the past.
