UNICONDYLAR KNEE REPLACEMENT
- The knee joint consists of three compartments: the medial compartment, lateral compartment and patellofemoral compartment. Traditional total knee replacement surgery replaces all three compartments. In some cases only one compartment is affected.
- Unicondylar knee replacement replaces only the portion of the knee that is damaged. If only one compartment is affected, it is most frequently the medial compartment.
- If the other two compartments of the knee are healthy, a unicondylar replacement can have many advantages:
- There is less trauma to the bony structures of the knee.
- Recovery can be faster.
- If your knee replacement needs to be revised in the future, this is usually easier to do if you have had a unicondylar knee replacement compared to a total knee replacement in the past.
