Salem, NH – Dr. Thomas Hoerner of Essex Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Salem, NH, recently attended a Hip Revision Master Class in Berlin, Germany. The program, designed to cover all aspects of revision hip surgery through interactive case discussions and key presentation topics from an international faculty, was limited to 10 United States surgeons.
Dr. Hoerner has performed nearly 700 anterior total hip replacements in addition to over 1,000 posterior total hip replacements. He completed his Fellowship in Adult Reconstructive Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 1983. “The Europeans have several novel and distinctly different approaches to revision total hip replacement surgery. With the aging population and over 200,000 primary hip replacements being performed annually in the United States, it was wonderful to expand my knowledge in the diagnosis and execution of revision total hip replacement surgery,” said Dr. Hoerner.
Dr. Hoerner had not been to Berlin since 1962, shortly after the erection of the Berlin Wall. He had traveled into East Berlin through Check Point Charlie and still recalls the flowers lying at the sites of failed escape attempts. He has not returned since the Wall came down in 1989 and found his trip professionally advancing and personally stimulating.
